The HCAI Working Group serves as the French national research body in Human–Computer Interaction with a dedicated focus on Human-Centred Artificial Intelligence.

Organized by the HCAI Working Group of the GDR IHM.

We are pleased to announce our 2nd annual one-day workshop dedicated to exploring current research in Human-Centred AI (HCAI) in France. This event brings together researchers, practitioners, and students interested in designing and understanding AI systems that place humans at the center.

During this one-day workshop, we will:

  • Present work from our community
  • Discuss the challenges identified at previous meetings
  • Develop a joint proposal with recommendations and research directions for HCAI in France

The workshop takes place on 19 October 2026, online and in person at CRIStAL (Université de Lille and Inria Lille), co-located with IHM 2026. No IHM registration is required to attend. We encourage in-person participation to build community over coffee.

Workshop structure

The morning features short talks and panels on work from our community. In the afternoon, we discuss these contributions in small groups and consolidate the outcomes into a joint proposal.

Call for contributions

We welcome publications, case studies, position papers, and emerging ideas addressing the challenges below (this list is not exclusive):

  • Human-Centred Design — Integrating stakeholders into the design and development of AI systems
  • Longevity of Scientific Knowledge — Preserving research knowledge as underlying technologies evolve rapidly
  • Socio-Technical Gap — Addressing ethics and safety when deploying so-called intelligent systems in real-world contexts
  • Ambiguity Surrounding “AI” — Researching a field that groups many techniques and practices under a single term
  • Influence on Regulation — Increasing the impact of research on the regulation of the technologies it studies
  • Modelling and Data Work — Designing AI systems and making the effort behind their operation visible
  • AI Uses and Evaluation — Defining AI applications and identifying relevant quantitative and qualitative metrics
  • Cognitive Sovereignty — Preserving users’ cognitive abilities and decision-making autonomy in human-AI interaction
  • Academic Research and Industry — Sustaining academic HCAI and HCI research when industry sets the main design directions

We welcome work that explores the problem space, proposes solutions, or opens new questions for HCAI. We’ll invite a selection of contributors to share their work in short talks or panel discussions.
